Season finale already?  You can’t be serious!  Oh yes, it’s very serious.  “The Departed” is being hyped as a doozy.  Given the setup they left us with last week (heck, all season!), I’m not surprised.

SPOILER ALERT!

This week is another flashback episode, going back to simpler times when Elena’s parents and Aunt Jenna was still alive.  We even get to see them!  Elena also seems to be a happy cheerleader while Jeremy is going through a thing.  You know, like he has the last three seasons.  Julie Plec sums it up this way in her Producer’s Preview:

“Elena is remembering a time before her parent’s died.  We’ll actually be flashing back to when life was different, when life was more simple, when life was more pure, a time before vampires came to town, when Elena was still a cheerleader and Elena was dating Matt Donovan, the high school football quarterback.  And Bonnie didn’t even really know she was a witch.  We’ll have nice little moments of remembering a time when things were simple because things aren’t simple for anybody right now.”

“Not simple” comes in the form of Alaric, who’s trying to get to Klaus and Rebekah, intending to end all vampires once and for all.  Julie Plec gives this promise about the episode, “I can say now, for 100 percent, there is someone does not survive til the end.”

So who could it be?  In this show, it can be anyone.  The real question is, does the death stick?  Look how many times Alaric has died.  Half of the cast is already dead, right?

Oh, and WAS THAT ELIJAH IN THE PREVIEW?  I’m positively squealing here!  I hope it’s real, I hope it’s real…

Here’s the official CW synopsis for “The Departed”:

THE SECRET HERO – Determined to protect his sister, Jeremy makes a decision that will change everything. In the harsh reality of the present situation, Elena longs for simpler times when her parents, Grayson (guest star Jason MacDonald) and Miranda (guest star Erin Beute), and Aunt Jenna (guest star Sara Canning) were still alive and her biggest concern was her relationship with Matt. Stefan and Damon leave Mystic Falls together on a mission, but soon split up when Elena needs one of them. Caroline and Tyler are forced to make a life-changing decision. Finally, Bonnie makes a secret deal that has heartbreaking consequences. John Behring directed the episode with story by Brett Matthews & Elisabeth R. Finch and teleplay by Julie Plec.
