If you’re like me, often times when the fall premiere TV season is near, I’m hit with a big dilemma.  A show that looks very interesting is going into another season, and I’ve missed the prior one (or ones).  Looking at the schedule, catching up via Netflix or DVD is impossible, so I either accumulate episodes on an already overstuffed DVR or I just let it go and hope some year I’ll work it in through marathon viewing.

This year, that dilemma is with Grimm.  There was a reason why I didn’t watch season One.  It was on opposite “Supernatural” and you know I couldn’t miss that.  But the previews through the Olympics have been just too enticing, and the second season premieres much earlier than other shows this Monday, August 13 at 10 pm.

Luckily, NBC has come to the rescue!  They’ve provided a quick way for those of us who missed season one to learn all we need to know to start with season two.  So here’s getting to know Grimm season one.  By the end of this summary you’ll know everything you need to watch the season two premiere and not feel completely lost.

Series Premise

Let’s start with the basics.  First, what exactly is this series about?  Here’s the breakdown per NBC:

A long time ago, the world lived under the rule of self-serving Royal families.  There were heroes and there were villains. Certain bloodlines possessed the gift  of seeing a person’s true nature, giving them unparalleled ability to maintain harmony. Those who vied for power took advantage of these talented individuals by forcing them to rally the fiercest warriors behind their banner. One such bloodline achieved notoriety both through their unique practice of profiling malcontents, as well as their gruesome methods of issuing justice. Over time, the Royals’ control began to dissolve, and the accounts that originally served as warnings became nothing more than folk legend.

Today the Grimm bloodline has a new emissary who has achieved his own notoriety by way of his uncharacteristic morals. Thanks in large part to an unlikely ally named Monroe, and a plethora of knowledge left to him by his late Aunt Marie, Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli, “Turn the Beat Around”) has been rewriting his ancestors’ stories one case at a time. However, Nick is slowly learning he can’t rewrite the same happy endings.Sometimes the wrong person spots the wolf in sheep’s clothing, the son isn’t always the apple of his mother’s eye, and sleeping beauty doesn’t always awaken unscathed…

Mythology:

For centuries a collection of keys has been sought by many, particularly by descendants of the Seven Royal Families that once ruled the world. One of these keys, thought lost through time, found its way into the hands of a Grimm named Marie Kessler. On her deathbed, she passed it along to her nephew, Nick Burkhardt, just days after he came to learn of his Grimm ability and heritage. Protecting the key is but one of several Grimm responsibilities Nick has come to face since he learned of his ancestry. Through a wealth of knowledge left to him by his Aunt Marie and the help of a reformed Wesen, Nick has realized why he must continue with his bloodline’s tradition of criminal profiling. In addition, he has been able to progressively connect with his inner Grimm. This connection allows a Grimm to channel from his ancestors, bringing out a raw and enhanced physicality in times of need, especially when fighting Wesen.

Nick was later introduced to a formidable and mysterious power: the coins of Zakynthos. These are three coins that take hold of the bearer causing him to lose all inhibition, and in time, bringing out the evil within. While Grimms are more immune to their influence than most, the coins have been known to leave previous owners obsessed, driving them to all depths of madness. Notable previous owners include: Nero, Liu Bang, and Hitler. The death of Nick’s parents is thought to be tied to these coins, but recent events have revealed many new layers to that theory.

Nick’s attempts to shield his fiancée, Juliette Silverton (Bitsie Tulloch, “The Artist”), and his partner, Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby, “Lincoln Heights”), from the hazards of his new life have reached a crisis, leaving Juliette in a mysterious coma and Hank on the verge of a mental breakdown.

With help from his confidants, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner, “The Ugly Truth”) — both reformed Grimm creatures, Nick must help those closest to him while still facing off against all manner of ancient evils, including royal lines dating back to the original profilers themselves, the Grimm Brothers. As Nick develops his ability to harness his inner Grimm, he begins to question what he once knew, never more so than when he is reunited with his mother (guest star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, “Scarface”), also a Grimm, whom he thought dead for the past 18 years. Reggie Lee (“The Dark Knight Rises”) and Sasha Roiz (“Caprica”) also star as Sgt. Wu and Captain Renard, respectively.
